A Colorado abortion clinic, known for providing late-term abortions, has closed its doors after operating for 50 years.
The clinic gained a reputation for its availability of procedures beyond 28 weeks of pregnancy, a rarity in the U.S.
As reported by the Associated Press, Dr. Warren Hern, the 87-year-old founder, expressed that shutting down the Boulder Abortion Clinic was one of the most difficult choices he has faced. Financial challenges played a significant role in the closure, with many patients unable to afford the $10,000 late abortion fees, which often lack insurance coverage. Despite his desire for someone to take over his practice, no one stepped forward.
In a 2023 Atlantic article, Hern shared his views on late abortions. He argues that the survival chances of a fetus are less about gestational age and more about a woman’s willingness to carry it. His approach remains consistent, prioritizing the safety of his patients. Typically, his procedures extended up to about 32 weeks.
