Arizona’s controversial 1864 abortion law was actually recodified by a Democratic governor and Democratic legislature in 1977, Arizona Rep. Travis Grantham (R) revealed during an appearance on his show. . Breitbart News Daily.
Democrats are fighting an 1864 law that criminalizes essentially all abortions in the state, and Arizona lawmakers on Wednesday announced that the law would be changed after some Republicans joined Democrats in their efforts. Voted in favor of repeal.
But Grantham pointed out that despite the rhetoric spread by Democrats (that this is an extreme Republican law), it was recodified by Democrats less than 50 years ago.

“When Arizona was a territory and we tried to become a state, we basically just took a bunch of the territory’s old rules and took them out of the rulebook and made them into law. The first legislature was One of the rules was that women could not have abortions. [It] “I didn’t read it exactly that way, but basically you can’t kill a child unless the mother’s life is at risk,” said Grantham, Speaker Pro Tem, who explained that it has since been amended several times. did.
“Most recently in Arizona in 1977 by Democratic Governor Raul Castro and then-Democratic Congressmen. And ironically, the member who was in that Legislature is now in the Senate. She is 81 She’s a Democrat. She voted for it,” he revealed.

When asked about the 81-year-old’s current position, Grantham described it as “ridiculous”. He said she was a nice woman, but added: “This is kind of how the Democratic Party works.”
“They say, ‘Well, we just recodified a bunch of old territorial laws that are just a bunch of numbers and references. We haven’t even actually read them. “We just voted to make the law because we thought it was all a good thing,” he said.
“I mean, how ridiculous their answers are and how weak their excuses are when it comes to this. They don’t really have a good reason,” he said, adding that the simple reality is that Democrats He explained that this had changed.
Democrats, he continued, are playing “a stupid game just like them.”
“Yes, I am pro-life. I am proudly pro-life. I am a Catholic. I support these values. I have voted against this repeal many times. Personally, I believe that abortion is bad, and of course there are times in life when you have to make difficult decisions, and as a politician, I don’t want to involve myself in that process. “So I liked the old law and I thought this law made sense,” he said, stressing that the law “takes mothers’ lives into consideration.” .

“We could have made a few tweaks to the language and treated rape incest (everyone wants to bring it up these days) as something missing. We couldn’t do that. . And here we are,” the congressman continued, explaining exactly why the matter was brought to the state Supreme Court.Everything depends on the Supreme Court’s reversal. Roe v. Wade It told states that “some of these restrictions cannot be enforced.” You can’t do this.’ And we never took it off the books. ”
“It just sat there. And of course we complied with what the U.S. Supreme Court said states can’t do and left it at that,” he explained.
“A few years ago, this Legislature, now Republican-controlled and with Republican Governor Ducey as governor, tightened up a little bit. We said, ‘Okay, okay.’ There are several things we can do through the court system. We’re going to have a 15-week abortion ban, and we’re going to ban abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions for the mother’s lifetime, potentially for rape and incest. But we put language in that bill that says: Roe vs. Wade “If this law goes away or there is a ruling that returns this power to the states, Arizona will revert to its original law,” he said.
“So that’s what the Supreme Court decided. They reevaluated this situation because of the lawsuit that was later filed. Roe vs. WadeAnd they rendered their judgment, holding that “the old law stands.”
