The number of abortions in the United States fell only slightly in 2022, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe. v. Wade, returns power to states to enact abortion laws.
Abortions decreased by just 2% in 2022 compared to 2021, according to new monitoring data From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Abortion rates also decreased by 3%; abortion rates also decreased by 2%.
The number of abortions fell from about 622,000 in 2021 to 609,000 in 2022, according to the data.

This is because, following a 2022 Supreme Court ruling, Republican-led states have enacted laws banning abortion, with some exceptions such as medical emergencies.
The data showed that most abortions were reported before the ninth week of pregnancy, and more than 70% were early medication abortions, similar to the numbers before Roe v. Wade was overturned.

More than 6% of abortions are performed between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% are performed after 21 weeks of pregnancy, according to the CDC report.
More than half of the abortions involved women in their 20s, according to the CDC.

The report also found data showed that nearly 60% of women who had an abortion had previously given birth.
CDC data includes figures for 47 U.S. regions that have published data from 2013 to 2022.
