Access Health CT Registration Now Open
Access Health CT has officially opened registration, and its CEO emphasizes the importance of reviewing your enrollment options this time around.
Recently, reports from NBC Connecticut highlighted re-enrollment letters showing higher monthly premiums for the upcoming year.
CEO James Michel attributes this increase to two main factors:
- an uptick in basic premiums
- the end of enhanced insurance subsidies that were in place during the COVID-19 pandemic
Michel mentioned, “There are still subsidies available to help with insurance costs. You might not find a plan as affordable as this year’s, but securing health insurance is still crucial.”
He encourages potential customers to explore options on AccessHealthCT.org or consult with a broker at no cost, noting that the renewal letter pricing doesn’t represent the only available choices.
“While your coverage might not be as extensive, it could still adequately protect you and your family,” he added.
There is a national worry that as premiums increase, healthier individuals may refrain from enrolling, potentially leading to a “death spiral,” according to Michel.
He explained, “This situation could mean higher costs and fewer funds if only those in poor health remain in the system. Rates will rise for everyone next year.”
As of Wednesday, the critical issue is Congress’s decision regarding the extension of enhanced COVID-era subsidies that help lower healthcare costs.
Michel urges individuals to hold off on registering until Congress reaches a resolution on these subsidies. The cutoff for signing up for coverage that begins on January 1 is December 15.
When asked about when Congress needs to extend these grants to avoid complications, he replied, “They should have acted back in September. Any changes now will create significant disruptions for insurance companies, us, and our clients.”
Nonetheless, he reassured that the organization would adapt to any new developments. It’s important to note that insurance premium prices could change after individuals have enrolled or made payments.
In the meantime, Michel stressed a straightforward message: to apply for health insurance beginning January 1, you must enroll by December 15.
