Accused NYPD sex pest Jeffrey Maddrey shouldn’t be cleared for firearms in retirement — which would allow security work, advocates say

He's not a good guy who should own a gun.

Accused NYPD sex pest Jeffrey Madley should be given a police retirement benefit: a firearms permit, a so-called “good guy letter” that gives him a ticket onto the private security gravy train. Not so, advocates argued.

Police reform advocates, including former top NYPD officials, pressured Commissioner Jessica Tisch this week to withhold the letter while the soon-to-be-retired Mr. Madeley faces federal scrutiny over a sordid overtime sex scandal. I applied it.

“'Good Guy Letters' should only be issued to uniformed members who have demonstrated sufficient honor, nobility and ethical leadership,” said former NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Osgood.

“Police officers who have engaged in, or are likely to engage in, corruption, sexual assault, sexual harassment, criminal obstruction, or other acts contrary to honor and integrity, especially if they are public servants, are subject to the・Do not issue “Guy Letters.”

NYPD officers who honorably retire will receive a Good Guy Letter, exempting them from the state's firearm possession and carry restrictions.

Retired police officers often use their good standing in the NYPD and access to firearms to land well-paying jobs in private security or consulting.

Ms. Madeley announced Thursday that Mr. Tisch was suspended and briefly given access to guns amid a federal raid of his Queens home by law enforcement officials investigating allegations that he provided sexual favors to subordinates for astronomical overtime pay. Lost access.

He had already resigned from his post and tendered his resignation after the Post exposed explosive accusations by Lt. Gov. Quatisha Epps, which he denies.

Mr. Epps was the NYPD's top earner last year, earning $400,000, with overtime making up more than half of his pay.

However, Madeley's suspension without pay will only last for 30 days, and Tisch's last option would be to withhold or deny his Good Guy Letter to ensure he does not retire on good terms.

Supporters argued that doing so would hold Mr. Madrid (who may contest the decision) responsible for the abuse allegations and force him into quiet retirement.

Mr Osgood said: “By issuing letters like this to violators of the Code of Honor and Nobility, we are dishonoring and tarnishing thousands of honorable and loyally serving police officers.”

Reformers also pushed to strip Mr. Madley's successor as director, John Chell, of access to firearms.

In 2008, Chell fatally shot a Brooklyn man in the back. He claimed the shooting was accidental and showed a disregard for discipline.
