Ace Bailey's jazz prospects become more unclear following agent conversation

Ace Bailey Saga Takes Unusual Turns

The situation surrounding Ace Bailey continues to be quite bizarre.

Jazz had a chance to clarify Bailey’s future with his agent, Omar Cooper, but he opted not to share any comments during an interview with ESPN’s Jonathan Givony on Thursday night.

In a subsequent report, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst mentioned that the Rutgers standout had not yet been discussed with Jazz, who drafted him fifth in Salt Lake City. Utah also selected Florida’s star, Walter Clayton, in the first round.

According to Windhorst, the Jazz seemed unbothered by the circumstances but felt compelled to accommodate Bailey’s preferences regarding his team.

Cooper defended the criticized pre-draft process he oversaw, despite the backlash it received.

Bailey caught many by surprise when he canceled a pre-draft training session with the 76ers just a day before it was scheduled.

Givony noted that there’s nothing particularly odd about Bailey’s pre-draft journey. Eight teams interviewed him, and they were able to assess his performance during the NBA Draft Combine, alongside reviewing his medical records and metrics.

Despite some criticisms, not everyone is convinced about the decisions made in the lead-up to the draft.

NBA All-Star Paul George weighed in on Bailey’s moves, saying that while he understands the pressures of the draft, one shouldn’t react strongly to fluctuating projections. He explained that Bailey had effectively canceled his training and didn’t perform well with any of the teams. George implied that given Bailey’s choices, he lacks the leverage to make significant demands.

Additionally, Givony reported that Bailey’s representatives informed one of the top five teams that they were not interested in being selected by them.

It’s unclear which team received this message, but there have been prior hints about Bailey’s desire to play for either the 6th or 8th pick teams, like the Wizards.

Throughout this chaotic narrative, Bailey’s undeniable talent shines through. In his freshman year at Rutgers, he excelled, averaging 17.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, his teammate, Dylan Harper, was selected second overall by the San Antonio Spurs.
