Active duty sergeant named as suspect in Fort Stewart shooting

Shooting Incident at Fort Stewart, Georgia

U.S. Army Sergeant Quornelius Radford has been named as the individual involved in a shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia, on Wednesday, which left five soldiers injured.

At 28 years old, Radford serves as an active-duty soldier. Authorities report that he opened fire in the area that houses the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, referred to as the “Spartan Brigade.”

Radford reportedly fired his weapon, injuring multiple soldiers before being subdued and detained by his fellow service members who were present.

Brig. Gen. John Lubas provided an update, stating that all five injured soldiers are in stable condition, although three will require surgery. The injured were initially treated at the scene and later taken to the Winn Army Community Hospital. Two soldiers were subsequently transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center, which is approximately an hour away from Savannah, Georgia.

Lubas stated that Radford holds the position of automated logistics sergeant within the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

In this role, someone like Radford would be responsible for overseeing and managing the automated systems tied to logistics operations in a military context. This would involve tracking and handling supplies and equipment to maintain the brigade’s operational readiness.

“This morning, just before 11:00, an active-duty soldier at Fort Stewart shot and injured five of his fellow soldiers,” Lubas informed during a briefing. “Fortunately, all are stable and expected to recover.”

Law enforcement was dispatched to the scene at 10:56 a.m. ET, with Radford in custody by 11:35 a.m. It has been noted that he used a personal handgun for the shootings, and Lubas mentioned that Radford had been arrested previously in May for a DUI, information that was not known to his superiors until after the incident when they reviewed legal databases.

The motive behind Radford’s actions remains unclear.

“We’re still investigating the motivation, but he has been interviewed by Army officials, and we hope to have more details soon,” Lubas added.

Fort Stewart’s Hunter Army Airfield was placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m., but the lockdown was lifted shortly after, about an hour later.

Key officials, including President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have been briefed on the matter.

“FBI personnel are responding to Fort Stewart following the shooting incident. We are ready to provide any necessary resources and support for the investigation,” announced Dan Bongino in a post.
