Dan Levy Reacts to Shane Gillis’s Controversial SNL Monologue

Comedian and actor Dan Levy expressed his anger following Shane Gillis’s “Saturday Night Live” monologue, where Gillis made comments regarding women in New York gyms, describing them as “dressing like whores.”

During his segment, Gillis shared his experiences at the gym, saying, “Going to the public gym as a fat guy, especially in New York, is a nightmare. It’s just the hottest gay guys you’ve ever seen. They’re jacked, and they look at me like, ‘Yeah, right.’ I know, dude.” He also remarked on what he perceived as a change in women’s gym attire, stating, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dressed like whores now. Look, I’m sorry. There’s no other way to describe it—have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”

Levy, known for his role in “Schitt’s Creek,” was clearly not amused and took to Instagram to address the issue, calling for greater respect towards women.

He remarked, “Women wearing short shorts to the gym does not make them whores; it makes the men calling them whores misogynists. There’s a difference there.” Levy rejected the idea that women wear revealing clothes for attention, noting, “By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off.”

Levy then expressed his shock that such comments could be made on live national television. “I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television,” he stated candidly.

His comments came amidst ongoing discussions about serious issues, such as a high-profile gang-rape allegation at Cornell University, where opinions vary significantly about the circumstances surrounding the case. Some believe the alleged female victim was an instigator rather than just a victim.

“To be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment with which women are sexually assaulted, and it’s a conversation rather than a crime,” Levy argued. He emphasized that defending women is a collective responsibility, saying, “Men need to be defending women more. This is not a women’s issue; this is everybody’s issue.”

Gillis, who is often viewed as controversial due to his humor, has faced scrutiny for his political views but denies any Republican affiliation. He was briefly part of the “SNL” cast in 2019 before being let go, but later returned as a guest host.

His recent episode was met with positive feedback from conservative commentators, with some calling it “the first funny SNL episode in 20 years.” Highlights of the night included a playful segment about Dr. Seuss and humorously straightforward advertising from an HVAC company.
