Robert Carradine Passes Away at 71
Actor Robert Carradine, celebrated for his roles in “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Lizzie McGuire,” has died at the age of 71.
His brother, actor Keith Carradine, revealed that Robert died by suicide after struggling with bipolar disorder.
Coming from a distinguished acting lineage that included his father John and brothers Keith and David, Robert’s legacy is significant.
The family released a statement expressing their profound sadness over the loss of Robert, referring to him as their beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. They marked him as a beacon of light in a dark world and shared hopes that his story would inspire conversations about mental health and reduce stigma. They requested privacy during their grieving process.
In the wake of his passing, Keith urged the public to understand the struggle of bipolar disorder, expressing pride in his brother’s journey with the illness. He highlighted the inherent value of sharing such experiences, saying there should be no shame attached to it. Keith fondly remembered Robert’s gifts and said they would miss him dearly, cherishing his humor, wisdom, and capacity for acceptance.
Robert Carradine began his film career in John Wayne’s western “Cowboys” in 1972 before appearing in Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets.” He had a notable role in the 1978 film “Coming Home,” which gained an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
However, it was his portrayal of Louis Skolnick in the 1984 comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” that really resonated with audiences. The film featured an unlikely underdog story involving a nerdy group competing against a fraternity. To many’s surprise, it became a box office success, grossing $40 million on a modest budget of $6 million, and led to three sequels.
Reflecting on the movie, Carradine shared that he didn’t anticipate its success but had an amazing time creating it, noting that the positive energy on set translated well to film.
He also reprised his role for a new generation in “Lizzie McGuire,” where he played Sam McGuire, establishing a connection with younger fans.
Hilary Duff, who starred as Lizzie, expressed her sorrow at the news, reminiscing about the warmth within their on-screen family and her gratitude for the care they shared. Actor Jake Thomas, who portrayed Carradine’s son on the show, echoed this sentiment, describing Robert as one of the coolest, most down-to-earth people he had known, filled with humor and quirks.
Carradine had a daughter, Ever, with Susan Snyder, and later married Edith Manni, with whom he had two more children, Marika and Ian, before their divorce after 25 years. Ever shared a heartfelt message on social media, remembering her father’s love and genuine nature, urging others to spread kindness in a divided world.
