Camilla Luddington Opens Up About Autoimmune Disorder Diagnosis
Camilla Luddington, best recognized for her role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” has candidly discussed her ongoing struggle with health issues that have left her feeling confused and drained. Recently, she revealed that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that has significantly altered her daily life, both physically and emotionally.
Luddington, 41, shared that she first began realizing something was off around five months ago but received confirmation of her diagnosis only after a recent blood test. “My doctors said everything looked fine except for this one thing,” she explained, recalling her reaction when she first heard the term “autoimmune disease.” It was a rude awakening, to say the least.
In her discussions, she learned she has Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, a rather common autoimmune disorder. This condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, leading to a variety of symptoms like extreme fatigue, joint pain, and muscle weakness. “It’s kind of strange,” she noted, “because you wouldn’t really think a small gland in your neck could do so much.” It can definitely make you feel, well, a bit sluggish.
Luddington described some peculiar symptoms leading up to the diagnosis, mentioning how she had been waking up with swollen hands and face. “I was perplexed,” she said, “I couldn’t even get my ring off!” Ultimately, after the blood test, her doctors were surprised that she had been able to function under such circumstances.
While this diagnosis was undoubtedly overwhelming, Luddington found some comfort in understanding what was happening with her body. “Sometimes when you experience health anxiety, it’s like you’re trying to convince yourself that nothing is wrong. I kept thinking, ‘Am I going crazy?’” she admitted. The diagnosis felt like validation, in a way—a sign that she wasn’t just imagining her struggles.
Despite the daunting nature of her condition, she expressed optimism about her treatment plan and the support she’s received. “Being told that we can manage this was such a relief,” Luddington shared. Yet, she openly acknowledged the challenges that come with living with an autoimmune disorder. “I didn’t realize how tired I truly was,” she reflected, indicating it’s been a tough journey.
As she continues to navigate this new chapter in her life, Luddington’s experience serves as a reminder of the complexities of health issues that often remain invisible to others.
