Camryn Manheim’s Candid Confession at HRC Dinner

Actress Camryn Manheim recently opened up about her desire for a gay son during a candid and somewhat unconventional speech at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner on September 26.

Manheim, who is widely recognized for her role as Ellenor Frutt on “The Practice,” took the opportunity while honoring her friend Marcia Gay Harden with the Ally for Equality Award to express her dissatisfaction with her son’s heterosexuality, despite her efforts to influence him otherwise.

“I always wanted a gay son. I have photos of my son in high heels, in full drag. But no! He’s the only straight guy in his musical theatre company.”

When Marcia Gay Harden shared that her son had come out to her, I exclaimed, “Oh my god, you are so f**king lucky!”

While introducing Harden, Manheim humorously lamented, “She has three wonderful children who all embrace the LGBTQ+ community, which honestly bothers me a bit because I always wanted a gay son.” She continued with an enthusiastic monologue about the special bond she thinks exists between gay sons and their mothers.

Manheim added, “I wanted to be that supportive mom, you know, the one ready to stand up for her kid. Let’s be real, gay sons are just the best, right?” This sentiment drew cheers from the audience.

The actress continued, reminiscing about moments with her son. “I have pictures of him in high heels, in full drag; he knows all the lyrics to every musical ever. His fairy godfather is here tonight,” she elaborated.

In a light-hearted complaint, she said, “I thought I had this all figured out, but no, he’s the only straight guy in his entire musical theater company.”

When Marcia called me to tell me that her son had come out, I was like, “You are so f**king lucky!”

Manheim’s son, Milo, is a 25-year-old actor who has made his mark as Zed in Disney’s “Zombies.” He recently portrayed Joseph in the Christmas musical “Journey to Bethlehem” and was a runner-up on “Dancing With The Stars.”
