Joanna Bacon Passes Away at 72
Joanna Bacon, recognized for her performances in “Love Itally” and the British soap opera “Eastenders,” has passed away at the age of 72.
She lost her “short and brave” battle with cancer on June 14, just six months after being diagnosed. The Harlow Theatre Company in the UK shared that her funeral took place on July 15.
The theatre company expressed their sorrow, saying, “It is extremely sad to notify Jo Bacon’s past and present HTC members on June 14 following a short and brave battle with cancer.”
“Many of our members remember Jo’s natural talent, her wit, her energy, and passion for acting. She joined the Harlow Theatre Company in early 1978,” they continued.
Throughout her career, Bacon participated in numerous plays, taking on memorable roles such as Portia in “The Merchant of Venice,” Maddie in “Dirty Linen,” and Beverly in “Abigail’s Party.”
Bacon accrued significant television experience in the UK, with roles in popular shows like “EastEnders,” “Casualty,” “Prime Suspect,” “The Bill,” and “Little Britain.” She also starred in the 2003 film “Love Lear,” portraying Natalie’s mother alongside Martin McCutcheon and sharing scenes with Hugh Grant.
Most recently, she appeared in the 2016 film “A Quiet Passion” alongside Cynthia Nixon, which garnered her a following. The series “Breeders,” which aired from 2020 to 2023, highlighted her talent in dark comedy.
Bacon’s loved ones gathered recently for a heartfelt funeral in the UK.
Reflecting on her cancer diagnosis in early 2025, she stated, “I was lucky to have a brilliant life. I met amazing people and have no regrets.”
Theatre company members remembered her fondly, stating, “Jo was sadly overlooked, yet she remained supportive of HTC, engaging with our work. She often sat in the front row with her notebook, watching with passion and a critical eye, never failing to commend our efforts.”
