Joanna Cassidy Confirms Relationship with Alan Hamel
During a recent podcast appearance, Joanna Cassidy, the 80-year-old actress, shared details about her relationship with Alan Hamel. On Steve Kmetko’s Still Here Podcast, when asked if she was dating, she replied, “Well, I’m dating someone.” She mentioned that her new partner is a widower who hasn’t been in the dating scene for quite a while. “Honestly, I don’t know why it hasn’t happened before this,” she added, hinting at how love can be unpredictable. Cassidy expressed that they met by chance about a year ago and that things are going positively.
Initially hesitant to disclose her partner’s name, Cassidy finally revealed, “His name is Alan Hamel; he was married to Suzanne Somers for many years.” Somers and Hamel had a long relationship, lasting 55 years, and were married for 46 years before her passing in October 2023 after battling breast cancer. Cassidy and Somers had previously worked together in a miniseries back in 1985, and when asked if dating Hamel felt awkward given their shared history, Cassidy said, “Absolutely not, not for me.”
Prior to this, Cassidy was married to psychiatrist Dr. Kennard C. Koblin for a decade, from 1964 to 1974, and they had two children together. Recently, Cassidy hadn’t publicly discussed her relationship with Hamel, but in a June 2025 interview, she mentioned that Hamel and she had known each other for many years, having first met when he guest-starred on his show.
Hamel explained their reunion, noting he suggested they meet up after a long conversation at a screening. He also shared that it was “weird” for him to step back into dating after Somers’ death, but he believed it was what she would have wanted.
Reflecting on their relationship, Hamel described it as good and emphasized the joy of spending time together, saying, “We’ve been spending a lot of time with each other, which is great.” He highlighted a poignant moment from Somers’ last days, stating that she encouraged him to “just live your life.” Hamel expressed gratitude for having Cassidy in his life, noting, “Most men would want to have Joanna in their life.”
Cassidy also conveyed that her connection with Hamel felt “very natural” and described feeling “very safe.” Interestingly, she recalled their first date lasting three days—definitely a sign of a budding romance.
