Actress Mamie Van Doren shares details about her date with Rock Hudson

Mamie Van Doren Set to Receive Legacy Award at Synthecon Film Festival

At 94 years old, Mamie Van Doren is about to be honored with the annual Legacy Award during the Synthecon Film Festival. She will introduce a screening of her 1959 film “Guns, Girls, Gangsters.” Interestingly, a book detailing her life will also be released later this year alongside news of a new documentary she is currently filming.

Before she became a well-known Hollywood icon, Universal Studios arranged dates for her with various movie stars in an effort to elevate her profile. One of those dates was with Rock Hudson, about whom she has quite a story to tell. Reflecting on her experiences, she recalled that while studio insiders suggested Hudson was gay, they reassured her saying, “You have nothing to worry about.” But she firmly denies this notion, asserting that, in her experience, Hudson was quite interested in her.

In her memoir, she describes an encounter with Hudson that was, well, memorable. She also reminisces about the harsh realities of Hollywood, particularly regarding its expectation of Hudson’s public persona as a “lady killer.” It wasn’t until after his death from AIDS in 1985 that many truths were revealed. Hudson’s sexuality was largely a secret among Hollywood elites, and Van Doren echoed a sentiment that she had heard long before the general public became aware of it.

In recounting her life in Tinseltown, Van Doren also touched on her experiences with Gig Young, another actor from her past, revealing that she had reservations about dating him. “I had a problem with that,” she said, reflecting on her own marriage at the time and suggesting that she felt a certain energy from him that wasn’t right. In a tragic twist, Young later took his wife’s life before ending his own life in 1978.

Despite the glamor often associated with being a sex symbol, Van Doren has openly expressed pride in her image. She quipped about liking the idea of being sexy, even admitting, “I like sex. I like it more than rock and roll.” Additionally, she feels a sense of gratitude for her life and acknowledges the plight of her contemporaries, many of whom faced tragic fates at a young age.

Having left Hollywood for Newport Beach, she sought a different lifestyle, one where her son could enjoy a more stable environment. In her words, “I wanted him to live a better life,” indicating her desire for a break from the chaos that often envelops the entertainment industry.

Ultimately, Mamie Van Doren sees her life as having divine guidance, stating, “I have some great angels on my shoulder.” She embraces kindness, even in the face of adversity, presenting a perspective that’s both optimistic and reflective. Looking back, she appreciates the doors she opened for future generations, believing she was ahead of her time during a more conservative era.
