Comedian and podcaster Adam Carolla has finally revealed he’s leaving California, likening staying in the state to forgiving a drug-addicted family member.
The 60-year-old has been asked about the possibility of leaving the state for several years, and told host Sage Steele that finally “it’s time to move.”
The move coincides with his teenage twins graduating from high school, but the comedian has said for years that he didn’t want his kids to emigrate.
“I have twins and they’re in their senior year of high school and I didn’t want to uproot them, so people are always asking me, ‘When are you leaving?’ I’m going to get in a U-Haul and go to their high school graduation,” Carolla joked.
“We’re getting what we deserve, and we deserve it.”
Carolla, one of America’s first podcasters, said California has been in constant decline in recent years and compared it to decades ago, when leaving Los Angeles was never on his mind.
“It’s also a sad testament to California and the recent downturn in LA, because nobody left here because they grew up here. It would be foolish to leave. The idea of leaving LA and going to the Carolinas or Nashville… if you watch the beginning of 90210, they lived over here and then they came over to where we are, and I was already there,” he said.Sage Steele Show“
“Moving to a place like Wyoming would have been unimaginable, unheard of,” he added.
Carolla said Texas, Florida and the Carolinas are among 15 states being considered for relocation, and he also delved into the problems caused by California Governor Gavin Newsom.
“He’s a clown. He’s an idiot,” Carolla said. “I ask a lot of people when it’s going to end, when it’s going to turn around, and the number one answer is, ‘We haven’t bottomed out yet. We’re close. We haven’t really bottomed out yet.’ And I say, ‘Why do we need to bottom out?'” Carolla asked rhetorically.
“That’s like saying you were looking for something in your son’s room and you found syringes and bags of heroin, but his heart hasn’t stopped yet. You walked in and you didn’t see him foaming at the mouth or convulsing. And you say, ‘Yes, I know, but why don’t you treat him now?’ And they say, ‘Because his heart hasn’t stopped yet.’ And they say, ‘Yes, I know, but why do we have to be at our lowest?’ We know where we’re going. Let’s change course. We can’t do that in California or Los Angeles.”
Carolla told Steele that California “got what it deserved,” pointing to her mother as an example of the liberal mindset that permeates the state. She described her late parents as “ultra-progressive white women” and said she didn’t know who Larry Elder was when he ran for governor, but just knew “Gavin Newsom is a Democrat” and that was enough for her.
“So [Californians] Vote. Like Dumbo’s mom. Like, stay with Gavin Newsom or die. Like, can we admit we made a mistake and try something else? But it’s like, ‘No, we can’t.'”
