Adam Carolla Reflects on Jimmy Kimmel’s Early Influence

Comedian Adam Carolla shared that Jimmy Kimmel was the first person to recognize his humor and encourage him to think about a career in entertainment. He discussed this during an episode of “Hang Out with Sean Hannity,” recalling how their unlikely friendship began over boxing lessons.

“He wasn’t a great boxer, but he was a really good comedian,” Carolla remarked. “He was the first person in my life to say, ‘You are funny, man. You should be doing this.'” This mentorship began when Carolla found himself locked out of KROQ radio station one morning and later asked someone to inform Kimmel he had a boxing trainer waiting outside.

About twenty minutes later, Kimmel, who was then known as Jimmy the Sports Guy, let Carolla in to start their training sessions. “I ended up talking to him more about comedy than I did about boxing,” Carolla said, reflecting on how their conversations shifted from sports to humor.

Carolla also emphasized the role of comedians as truth-tellers, highlighting concerns about free speech during his podcast appearance. He mentioned the pressures faced by comedians, especially during the pandemic, when he experienced criticism and calls for cancellation over certain jokes. He expressed frustration with those perpetrating cancel culture, describing them as “cowards.”

Carolla warned that when comedians are targeted, it signals a troubling trend for society. He pointed out that while many can be silenced—like union workers, teachers, and politicians—comedians being stifled is particularly concerning. “When you get to the comedians, that’s a bad sign for society,” he stated, expressing sadness over how some comedians have been affected by this atmosphere.
