Dallas’ defensive coordinator drama has taken another interesting turn.
On Monday’s “Pat McAfee Show,” McAfee played footage from Sunday when ESPN Insider Adam Schefter announced that Mike Zimmer would be the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator, but he didn’t interview for the position. Rex Ryan, who received the report, disputed the report. This means it’s a done deal.
McAfee asks Schefter if he spoke to Ryan before the show, what he meant when Ryan disputed the report, and how confident insiders are that Zimmer is getting the job. I asked.
“You’re not the only ones surprised by that, are you?” Schefter said.
“When I hear that, I think, ‘What the hell?’
Schefter said that even though Ryan is a colleague, the former Jets and Bills head coach was not always honest in his reporting.
Schefter approached Ryan last year with the idea that he was in talks for a defensive coordinator position on Sean Payton’s Broncos staff, and Ryan responded, “Nothing,” before Jay Glazer told Fox Sports. He delivered the following news. Ryan was interviewing for the role.
“Fast forward to this year. We have a meeting and we go over what topics are going to be covered. People know. It’s not surprising,” Schefter said.
“I found out from talking to different people in Las Vegas this week that they didn’t like Rex. They loved Rex. When Jerry Jones finished listening to Rex, he said, ‘That’s it. I was like, “I’m ready to run through walls for people.”
At this point, Mr. Schefter retracted his report from the previous day.
“Lex said what he said. He opened it. Finish it now. And I love Lex,” he said.
“Mike Zimmer’s contract wasn’t done yet, so they contacted Rex after that and contacted him 15 minutes before that segment and said, ‘Hey, can we hit something?'” Confusion arose. Zimmer’s contract isn’t finished yet. ”
Ryan has been working at ESPN since parting ways with the Bills after the 2016 NFL season.
