Schiff Establishes Legal Defense Fund Amid DOJ Investigation
California Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat, has initiated a legal defense fund while the Department of Justice looks into allegations of mortgage fraud concerning his financial dealings.
Having long been a target of President Donald Trump, Schiff may be facing an extended legal struggle as the DOJ examines his transactions involving properties in Maryland and California during his time in the House of Representatives. On Thursday, California Democrats rolled out the Senator Schiff Legal Defense Fund, as noted by the Internal Revenue Service.
Attorney General Pam Bondy assigned Ed Martin as a special prosecutor on August 8 to delve into claims of mortgage fraud. Allegations suggest that Schiff misrepresented his Maryland home as his primary residence to qualify for better loan terms while simultaneously asserting that his Burbank condo in California was his main residence.
Schiff’s attorney, Preet Bharara, has dismissed these allegations as “transparently false, old and shaking for a long time,” referring to his consistent opposition to Trump. Bharara was a notable critic of Trump before being dismissed from his role as a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York in March 2017.
A Maryland judge is currently deliberating whether to approve criminal charges regarding the allegations that Schiff and associates falsified property records to secure advantageous loan conditions.
Trump has repeatedly implied that Schiff should face charges related to his real estate dealings, stating, “Adam Schiff said his main residence was in Maryland and when he had to live in California… he was in Maryland to get a cheaper mortgage.” He has long accused Schiff of being deceptive.
Additionally, Trump has criticized Schiff’s participation in investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, suggesting that California Democrats could be at risk of prosecution.
In response, Schiff’s representative, Marisol Samayoa, articulated concerns about the use of judicial processes as a political weapon against Schiff for holding the Trump administration accountable. The legal defense fund aims to help Schiff counter these allegations while continuing his legislative duties.
