Schiff Comments on Investigation of Governor Newsom

California Senator Adam Schiff has shared his thoughts regarding the U.S. Department of Justice’s ongoing investigation into Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

“It’s not to say there’s no merit to the investigation, even if it involves someone who isn’t exactly a fan of the president,” he told KCRA’s Ashley Zavala. “But we’re witnessing, I mean, there’s dramatic evidence of abuse within the department.”

He continued, questioning, “Is it really conceivable that a legitimate investigation could exist under these circumstances?”

“From what I understand, the governor’s former chief of staff indicated that the governor had no part in her eventual guilty plea. That’s pretty much all I can say on that front,” Schiff added.

Last week, Newsom claimed that President Donald Trump was guiding the Justice Department to pursue an investigation against him, his wife, and other family members, framing it as political retaliation amid his potential 2028 presidential ambitions.

The inquiry is centered around tax records and the finances of a nonprofit linked to Siebel Newsom, along with an expanded investigation related to another incident involving Newsom’s former chief of staff.

Schiff, a close ally of Newsom, noted instances of “egregious abuse” by the Trump-era Justice Department.

He highlighted, “Take the indictment of James Comey over seashells—it’s simply unfathomable. That case will be dismissed. It’s just a matter of whether a judge or jury will do it first, and how fast it happens. This is a blatant abuse of power.”

The 66-year-old senator, who starts his first term in 2024, asserted that he has been a target of the president since his involvement in the impeachment process while serving in the House and in the January 6 committee.

“We must speak out when we observe such abuses, particularly when they pursue prosecution against their opponents,” Schiff emphasized.

“The evidence is quite compelling, shifting the burden onto the Justice Department to validate their actions. It doesn’t put the onus on the president’s political adversaries to prove anything.”
