Adam Thielen Returns to the Vikings
Adam Thielen made significant sacrifices to rejoin the team he previously played for.
The veteran wide receiver, now 35, took a $2 million pay cut to facilitate a trade back to the Vikings after spending time with the Panthers. This deal was confirmed on Wednesday and reported on Saturday by various sources.
Negotiations between the two teams dragged on for over a week, largely due to discussions surrounding draft pick compensation.
As part of the trade, the Vikings surrendered a fifth-round pick in 2026, a fourth-round pick in 2027, and a conditional seventh-round pick in 2026.
While Thielen’s salary increased by $1.5 million to reach $7 million for 2025, the Vikings opted not to cover part of the two-time Pro Bowler’s previous salary, according to reports.
Ultimately, Thielen’s decision to adjust his pay made the trade work for both parties.
After the contract was finalized, Thielen spoke to reporters about how meaningful returning to Minnesota is for him and his family.
“You all know how much this place means to me,” he shared. “The state, the cities, the organization, the coaches, the players—I’m just incredibly excited to head back home.”
A Minnesota native, Thielen played his college football in the state and spent his first nine seasons in the NFL with the Vikings.
During those years, he recorded 534 receptions for 6,682 yards and 55 touchdowns, leading him to participate in four playoff appearances.
Thielen is ranked third in career receptions for the Vikings, trailing only Hall of Famers Chris Carter and Randy Moss.
Following his release from the Vikings after the 2023 season, he signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Panthers.
Reflecting on his time in Carolina, Thielen credited quarterback Bryce Young with helping to elevate his career.
“I have a lot of respect for him as a leader and a quarterback,” he noted. “His journey, especially through adversity in his first two years, speaks volumes about his character.” He added, “I wouldn’t be where I am without him. He believed in me and provided me opportunities.”
Looking ahead, the Vikings are set to face their rivals, the Bears, on September 8 during Monday Night Football.
