Police Surge in the Bronx Following Shootings

Mayor Eric Adams announced the deployment of 1,000 police officers to the Bronx this weekend in response to a recent spike in gun violence.

During a conversation with a community member at Haffen Park, where a deadly shooting occurred Saturday night, he noted, “We have 1,000 officers dispatched in the Bronx to support the Chiefs. [Benjamin] Adams will be assisting Gurley and other staff.”

He emphasized the importance of visible police presence, mentioning, “We welcomed an officer from behind our desk this weekend and want to ensure there’s a solid plan to handle this violence.”

This announcement comes a week after a gang-related shooting claimed the life of a 32-year-old man near Bronx Park, leaving three others injured, including a teenage girl who was seriously hurt by a stray bullet.

Authorities have charged two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, with several offenses, including murder and attempted murder, stemming from the violent disruptions during basketball tournaments.

Daeven Reyes, 20, and Robert Royal, 25, also face serious charges such as murder and weapons offenses, with Reyes facing additional gang assault charges, as reported by police.

“When gang violence erupts, it’s a stark reminder that this isn’t just rival gang members,” Adams remarked, flanked by community leaders, police personnel, and Bronx district attorney Darcel Clark.

“We have plans to tackle this issue, and we recognize that it’s not solely about police enforcement; we need to focus on both prevention and reactive measures.”

The mayor highlighted that numerous officers will patrol areas known for violence, often referred to as “hot spots.”

Additionally, there are plans for peace talks involving gang members and professional mediators at the mayor’s mansion in the upcoming days.

“We aim to engage key gang figures to discuss potential solutions to curb this violence,” Adams elaborated.

The 17-year-old sister of Anthonaya Campbell, who was innocently caught in the gunfire, suffered a serious head injury from a stray bullet and was present at the press conference.

Adams mentioned that public concerns were raised as well, stating that one worried brother questioned the effectiveness of only having a couple of officers in certain areas, pondering if it made sense to address violence with limited resources.

NYPD records reveal that District 4 has experienced 50% of the city’s shooting incidents this year, coinciding with Mayor Adams’s claim of a notable decrease in other districts.

As of August 17th, 21 shootings have been reported in precincts that include Baychester, Williams Bridge, and Woodlawn, not counting the incidents from Saturday night.
