Adelita Grijalva Wins Arizona’s Special Election
Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat, has emerged victorious in the special election for Arizona’s predominantly blue 7th Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Daniel Butierrez.
This district encompasses much of southern Arizona, including a significant portion of Tucson.
The seat was previously held by her father, Raul Grijalva, a Democrat who had a notable career as a co-chair of Congress’s progressive Caucus and the Natural Resources Committee before his passing.
Now, the newly elected 54-year-old Grijalva is poised to carry on her father’s progressive legacy. Her campaign emphasizes addressing “Trump’s economic turmoil,” including initiatives against “harmful tariffs and excessive militarization of borders.” She also champions the rights of transgender and LGBTQ+ communities and advocates for the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore abortion access across the country.
In an interview with ABC News before the Democratic primary, Grijalva noted, “I’m not running on my last name. My father had big shoes to fill, but I’ve been standing on my own for over 20 years in public service here in Arizona.”
Grijalva has a history of public service on the Pima County Board of Supervisors and has spent over 25 years with the Pima County Teen Court. She has received endorsements from notable figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, as well as from the Progressive Caucus.
Her victory also has broader implications for the House of Representatives, as her swearing-in will contribute to a Republican minority in the House.
