ADL starts ‘Mamdani Monitor’ to observe NYC's mayor-elect

ADL Launches Monitor for NYC Mayor-Elect Amid Controversy

This week, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which monitors anti-Semitic activities nationwide, introduced the Mamdani Monitor to keep tabs on New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani.

The initiative comes right after Mamdani’s election as the mayor of the largest city in the U.S. Some critics have raised concerns about his stance towards Israel, pointing to his founding of the Palestinian Justice Student Chapter at Bowdoin College and his past comments that many view as anti-Semitic. They argue that the support he received from anti-Israel activists further complicates his position.

On its website, the ADL stated, “Given Mayor-elect Mamdani’s long and disturbing history on issues of deep concern to the Jewish community, we are closely monitoring and responding to the new administration’s policies and appointments.”

In a video shared on the ADL’s Instagram, Jonathan Greenblatt, the organization’s CEO, expressed concern over Mamdani’s intense opposition to the Jewish state throughout his public life. “His track record, the people surrounding him, and the ideas he’s championed raise some significant concerns,” Greenblatt noted.

He highlighted Mamdani’s commitment to advancing the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, and his refusal to denounce phrases like “globalize the intifada,” which call for global resistance to Israel.

In response to the ADL’s initiative, there’s been backlash from certain Jewish organizations. J Street, a progressive pro-Israel advocacy group, deemed the tracker “alarming,” criticizing the ADL for targeting Mamdani without offering the same scrutiny to figures like former President Trump, who have also been accused of exploiting anti-Semitism for political gains.

J Street stated, “We expect community organizations to confront hate in all forms, rather than selectively inflating fears to gain political advantage or incite community panic.”

Meanwhile, the ADL plans to enhance its investigation into appointments in Mamdani’s administration that could influence policies affecting the Jewish community. They have also created a tip line for New York Jews to report instances of anti-Semitism.
