Administration indicates military option is possible as Trump seeks to acquire Greenland

President Trump: “We need Greenland”

President Donald Trump explained to reporters why he believes the United States requires Greenland for “national security” during a flight on Air Force One.

The White House indicated on Tuesday that Trump sees acquiring Greenland as a key priority for national security, considering the deployment of U.S. troops as a potential strategy while evaluating options for assertive claims in the Arctic region.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated, “President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority for the United States.” She added that discussions are ongoing about how to move forward with this foreign policy goal. Consequently, the possibility of utilizing military force remains an option at the president’s discretion.

Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, has since proposed a bill aimed at preventing Trump from military interventions in what he described as “whimsical foreign countries” regarding Greenland.

Leavitt’s comments mark the clearest indication from the White House that military action could be on the table as Trump amplifies pressure on Denmark relating to Greenland’s strategic importance for U.S. missile detection and defense.

In response to Trump’s renewed interest in gaining control over Greenland, European leaders along with Canada have expressed strong support for the territory’s autonomy. Leaders from multiple nations including France, Britain, and Germany emphasized that decisions about Greenland’s future should be left solely to its people and to Denmark.

Amid the heated discussions, Senator Gallego criticized Trump’s potential for reckless decision-making based on recent events in Venezuela, suggesting that Congress should take steps to limit any unauthorized military action undertaken by the president.

Last month, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who is serving as Trump’s special envoy for Greenland, remarked that security concerns regarding Greenland should be a significant focus for the U.S., echoing the president’s sentiments that the U.S. needs Greenland to bolster its national security.

This situation continues to evolve. More updates will follow.
