Recent Decline in Drug Overdoses: A Closer Look

Finding something to celebrate in today’s America can feel like a challenge. One might think that the significant drop in drug overdoses over the past couple of years would qualify as good news. However, traditional media outlets face a dilemma: how to report this positive development without acknowledging President Donald Trump’s role in it.

In 2022, during President Biden’s administration, opioid overdose deaths tragically climbed to around 110,000. Back in 2025, under Trump, that figure was projected at about 73,000. It’s worth noting that the decline in overdoses kicked off in Biden’s last year—albeit after the administration recognized border security as a critical electoral matter. Compared to the previous year, the overdose numbers were down by 21% after Biden took office.

Interestingly, the drop of 37,000 deaths this year from the 2022 peak is noteworthy. For some perspective, the Vietnam War claimed 58,220 American lives. If one were to hear this good news, there might be a tendency to link it back to Biden’s strategies.

The previous administration’s achievements in this area could be likened to giving a serial arsonist credit for stopping at just one lit cigarette.

Biden’s last year in charge might remind some of a Bill Cosby joke about grandparents who are tough on their kids but kind to their grandkids. It’s like watching someone just hanging on until reelection, really.

Whatever the underlying reasons, it’s essential to acknowledge and appreciate that the previous administration contributed to a decrease in overdose deaths, even if it took some time. The continued drop under Trump is something to celebrate.

There’s a plethora of theories concerning the decline in overdose rates. Some attribute it to China’s new fentanyl regulations, while others point to the greater availability of overdose reversal drugs like naloxone, or even various treatment programs.

While Trump’s administration’s significant drug interdiction efforts may not always make headlines, they remain a critical component. For instance, in September, the Drug Enforcement Administration confiscated 200 pounds of fentanyl powder from the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel—ample to endanger multiple states.

Additionally, it’s notable that the southern border has undergone dramatic changes recently, distancing itself from previous chaotic images of drug trafficking.

With Trump overseeing measures to control inflation while simultaneously boosting wages, there’s hope that many vulnerable Americans can move toward more positive futures.

Let’s not shy away from mentioning rising church attendance, particularly among young people. Religion has often been seen as a means of coping, and it can certainly offer a healthier solace compared to opioid dependence.

All these favorable trends appear to have led to a remarkable reduction in daily overdoses from ten or twelve down to just one or two, according to some medical professionals.

Whether through border security, interceptor actions against drug smuggling operations, or negotiations with China, Trump’s agenda to tackle drug issues seems to be having an effect.

Politics can sometimes resemble a game show, with all eyes on the scoreboard and polling numbers. However, the stakes go well beyond that. Thanks to Trump’s policies, many families were able to celebrate holidays together—something that might have been starkly different without such measures.

The media’s reluctance to acknowledge any of Trump’s achievements—despite their significance—only highlights their struggles to maintain credibility amidst ongoing challenges.

If the current administration can keep this trend alive, fewer Americans will suffer from opioid-related harm, bringing joy to countless families, regardless of who receives the credit. And truly, that’s already something to be grateful for.
