Trump Administration Sends Immigration Officials to San Francisco

In a recent move, the Trump administration has dispatched 100 immigration officials to San Francisco, with their arrival set to begin this Thursday. This marks the second city in California to experience federal intervention.

The personnel will come from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Alameda Coast Guard Station, according to one official.

The Hill has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more details regarding the operation.

During a news conference over the weekend, President Trump shared his plans for increasing federal presence in the area, asserting that residents would support his initiative to address crime in San Francisco.

“We’re going to San Francisco, and we’re going to make it great. It’s not great right now,” he remarked, during an interview that aired on Sunday.

Trump emphasized, “They want us in San Francisco,” indicating a belief that the federal involvement is welcomed.

This crackdown comes just months before Super Bowl V, which will take place in Santa Clara, close to San Francisco.

According to FBI statistics, San Francisco currently ranks 13th nationwide for property crimes, reporting 3,929 property offenses and 5,118 robberies per 100,000 residents last year.

In response to rising crime rates, state officials have urged the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to take action in the San Francisco Bay Area.

However, Mayor Daniel Lurie (D) argued that “violent crime in San Francisco has fallen to levels not seen since the 1950s” and noted the recorded decrease in encampments. He believes the city is improving in terms of public safety.

Both Lurie and Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) have expressed that California does not require federal intervention.

Newsom voiced concerns about the federal strategy, stating, “California has had enough. President Trump and Stephen Miller’s authoritarian approach is infiltrating our cities. This creates chaos through violence and vandalism.” He also encouraged residents to prioritize safety and peace.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration deployed hundreds of Marines and National Guard troops to address anti-immigrant protests in Los Angeles, as similar demonstrations have also emerged in Illinois due to heightened immigration enforcement.

In the first nine months of his second term, the president has sent troops to various locations, including Illinois, Portland, Oregon, Memphis, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C.
