Adri Mehmeti: A Rising Star Next to Tyler Adams

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — It’s quite an experience, really, to sit next to a glimpse of your own future. This was the case for Adri Mehmeti on Wednesday, as he found himself alongside Tyler Adams.

At just 17 years old, Mehmeti is poised to earn his first senior national team cap in the coming weeks, building on a standout season with the Red Bulls. He has this calm presence on the ball that suggests he could be the USMNT’s holding midfielder of the future, much like Adams, who got called into his first camp at 18—a similar journey, really, starting from the same club and carrying those expectations.

“It’s a big step for me,” Mehmeti admitted. “Joining these experienced players and other young talents, learning from them, and seeing how various personalities mesh into the U.S. playing style has been a fantastic experience. It’s a big jump for sure, and, well, I need some time to adjust.”

Adams, who had been aware of Mehmeti and fellow Red Bulls teen Julian Hall since their middle school days in the academy, is here to offer his support. He emphasizes that while this opportunity is significant, making mistakes is part of growth.

“Every player here has the potential to become really good,” Adams remarked. “It’s all about navigating that journey.”

In the mix, Mehmeti stands out. Yes, it’s risky to label a 17-year-old with such high hopes, but there’s something there that feels special.

Hailing from Staten Island, Mehmeti, despite being just 17, showcases impressive technical skills and passing ability from central midfield. His playing style could complement Adams’ more defensive role, should the two find themselves paired together over the next couple of weeks.

“Watching him operate at the highest levels, it’s clear he has character and personality. His approach, both with and without the ball, serves as an inspiration for me,” Mehmeti said. “I hope to follow a similar path to his one day.”

It seems he’s off to a pretty solid start.
