Incident at the US Open: Hat Theft Sparks Outrage
A grown man drew anger after stealing the hat of Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak from a young fan during the US Open.
Footage from a live broadcast captured the moment on Thursday afternoon, where Majchrzak was interacting with fans following his thrilling five-set match against No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov and signing autographs.
As Majchrzak attempted to give his hat to a boy in the stands, a man, seemingly eager, snatched it away and shoved it into his wife’s bag. “What are you doing?” the upset boy exclaimed, clearly distressed by the theft.
Ignoring the child’s disappointment, the man then thrust a bottle of water in Majchrzak’s face, asking for another autograph. The tennis player continued signing without realizing what had transpired until the following day.
“After the match, I didn’t notice that my hat didn’t make it to the boy,” the 29-year-old commented, posting on Instagram screenshots of the heartbroken fan caught in the moment.
Majchrzak later reached out for help, asking, “Hey guys, could you help me find the child from my match? If that’s you, or if your parents are watching this, send me a DM.” He reassured followers that he had enough hats to share.
Within an hour, the boy was identified, and Majchrzak noted he was “impressed by the power of the internet.” Meanwhile, social media erupted in outrage, labeling the man a “jerk” and “terrible.”
One Reddit user expressed, “I hate stealing from a child,” while another added, “I’m glad you’re caught on camera. I hope he enjoys his 15 minutes of fame.”
The incident has transformed what could have been a simple fan moment into a spectacle of controversy and frustration.
