Advanced Tunnel Discovered Connecting San Diego and Tijuana

Discovery of Cross-Border Smuggling Tunnel in San Diego

Agents from the San Diego Border Patrol recently uncovered a complex smuggling tunnel that links California to Tijuana, Mexico. This tunnel reportedly stretches over 1,000 feet from Mexico into the United States.

According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the San Diego Sector tunnel team detected the passageway in April, revealing that it ran beneath the port of Otay Mesa.

Jeffrey D. Starnaker, the chief patrol agent for the San Diego Sector, remarked, “As we continue to enhance our security at the air and maritime borders, it’s not surprising that foreign terrorist groups might resort to underground routes. Disrupting the drug smuggling that these tunnels facilitate is crucial for safeguarding American lives.”

Photos from CBP depicted a well-constructed tunnel, complete with railroad tracks for efficient freight movement from Mexico to the U.S. Officials have meticulously mapped out the tunnel, which measures over 2,900 feet long, 42 inches in height, and 28 inches in width, reaching a maximum depth of about 50 feet underground.

It’s believed that the tunnel is directed towards a nearby commercial warehouse. The structure is equipped with electrical wiring, lighting, and ventilation systems, which indicate a level of sophistication in its design.

Upon entering the tunnel, agents discovered barriers intended to hinder passage southward, but they managed to locate an exit in Mexico and immediately contacted local law enforcement for assistance.

This week, the ICE Homeland Security Investigations, working alongside Mexican authorities, pinpointed the location of Nueva Tijuana. In a raid on a residence, police discovered the tunnel concealed beneath newly laid tiles.

Authorities suspect the tunnel is primarily designed for transporting significant quantities of drugs from Mexico to the United States.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Mexican officials and El Paso Sector border agents had found another tunnel aimed at facilitating migrant smuggling into the U.S.

This incident marks the second instance within just a couple of days that a tunnel was discovered in the area. Other tunneling activities have been reported as recently as January, as per local news sources.

In March, the House passed legislation mandating an annual report to Congress on cross-border smuggling tunnels. The bill, known as HR 495, received overwhelming support with a vote count of 402-1, the sole dissenting vote coming from Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
