Republican Convention Plans in Las Vegas for 2026
President Donald Trump’s advisers are exploring the option of hosting the Republican convention in Las Vegas in 2026. This comes after Trump announced a departure from the traditional practice of holding conventions solely during presidential election years.
In a post on Truth Social in September, Trump stated, “The Republican Party is going to hold a midterm convention to showcase the great things we have accomplished since the 2024 presidential election. Time and location to be determined. Stay tuned. It’s going to be a very exciting event.” He indicated this kind of event was unprecedented for Republicans.
A source involved in the discussions mentioned the Las Vegas venue option, although advisers are also considering locations like Texas and Washington, D.C., before making a final decision.
Historically, Democrats held midterm conventions in the 1970s and 1980s, but this practice has declined over the years due to perceptions that it’s a misuse of time and resources.
A notable timing aspect is that Trump’s announcement came just after Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin suggested the idea of a midterm convention during a gathering with party leaders in Minneapolis. Reports suggest Martin is subtly advocating this notion.
According to sources, the Republican convention is likely to coincide with the start of early voting for the 2026 elections, where all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships, among other local elections, are at stake.
Trump is reportedly aiming to foster an enjoyable atmosphere reminiscent of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which featured performances from Kid Rock and a speech from Hulk Hogan, who passed away in July.
Republican National Committee (RNC) spokeswoman Kirsten Pels expressed enthusiasm about the potential for a midterm convention, stating it “will showcase our party’s unity, vision, and commitment to expanding our majority in 2026.”
