Sams addressed the House Oversight Committee, stating that his direct engagements with Biden were minimal. This testimony feeds into the ongoing committee investigation regarding whether there has been an attempt to obscure Biden’s physical and cognitive decline during his presidency and reelection campaign.
Comer emphasized that it was significant that Sams, a spokesperson from the White House, had such limited interaction with Biden throughout his presidency, highlighting that anyone would find this surprising. Sams defended Biden’s capabilities but faced scrutiny due to the lack of firsthand experience with the president.
Sams spoke publicly with authority about Biden’s mental state, even as he admitted that his interactions with the president were very limited. According to Comer, it’s questionable for Sams to assert anything about Biden’s health when he doesn’t have enough direct contact.
The testimony also noted that Sams primarily took directives from White House lawyers and Biden’s close aides rather than forming opinions based on personal experiences. Despite making broad public statements regarding the president’s cognitive abilities, his claims seem to lack a strong foundation given his infrequent contact with Biden.
Additionally, in a previous briefing, a reporter highlighted that a claim from special advisor Robert Huar about Biden having “poor memories” was inaccurate. After interviewing Biden, Huar deemed him a “good-intentioned elderly man with bad memories,” which led him to refrain from pursuing charges linked to classified documents found with the president.
In a letter dated June 27, Comer urged Sams to respond to Congress, indicating that he played a role in managing narratives surrounding negative stories about Biden. Comer suggested that given the mounting evidence regarding Biden’s overall capability during his term, a thorough exploration of these matters was necessary.
Finally, Sams publicly stated that when former Vice President Kamala Harris launched her campaign, Biden should release his medical records to address any concerns about his health.
