Tom Cruise Discusses AI and the Future of Film

In the latest “Mission Impossible” film featuring Tom Cruise, the antagonist is an artificial intelligence known simply as the Entity. Interestingly, the filming occurred before a series of alarming AI incidents that suggest potential chaos ahead. In Cruise’s storyline, he believes that human unpredictability keeps machines from fully understanding us. Essentially, he’s confident that humanity will come out on top.

Cruise’s optimistic outlook on humanity makes him a great candidate to discuss the impact of AI on the entertainment industry. During a recent event in London, he expressed strong support for the idea that audiences crave authentic experiences in cinema.

At the talk hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Cruise emphasized his commitment to maintaining the movie theater experience, stating that it’s essential for people to gather in person and connect. He said, “Here’s the thing: There is nothing like human. I have nothing against streaming, but watching a film in a theater is a completely different art form.”

His faith in the traditional box office experience is evident. He fought rigorously to ensure his films could proceed during COVID-19, famously admonishing crew members who violated safety protocols by insisting that the future of the industry depended on their adherence.

“We are not shutting this f**king movie down!” he was heard declaring. Thanks to his efforts, the summer of 2026 saw record-breaking box office numbers.

Cruise noted that approximately $4.76 billion was made from May 1 to Labor Day, proudly asserting that “people want that experience.” As he put it, “They’re going to movie theaters.”

Moreover, he has actively advocated for actor and stunt performer rights, especially regarding AI’s role in the industry. Earlier this year, he engaged in discussions with movie studios during the SAG-AFTRA labor negotiations, pushing for protections around the use of AI to replicate actors’ voices and likenesses without their consent or fair compensation.

Cruise concluded by reinforcing the importance of human creativity, saying, “You know, [AI] is coming and it’s going to happen… But people want to see real things.” He has refrained from monetizing his likeness, even as many public figures are doing so amid increasing pressure from AI studios.

Interestingly, Val Kilmer, who faced his own battles with health issues, expressed gratitude for the recreation of his voice in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Following his passing, it was announced that AI technology would be used to bring him back to the screen.
