After years away from the franchise, Johnny Depp no longer rules out returning to Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp has not ruled out returning to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise as Captain Jack Sparrow, though he says the circumstances would have to feel right.

The original film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” arrived in 2003 and helped make Depp a major star. It also raised the profiles of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. Four more films followed between 2006 and 2017, with Depp appearing in each one.

The series has been on hold since then, amid the fallout from Depp’s relationship with his former wife, Amber Heard. Depp sued Heard for defamation over an opinion piece she published in The Washington Post, and won.

Depp had previously suggested nothing would persuade him to return. But in a recent interview, he said he might be interested if the filmmakers had a fitting way to conclude the story. He added that he would be willing to work with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, whom he trusts and considers a close friend.

For now, a return remains uncertain. Depp has continued working on other projects as he rebuilds his career. He appeared in “Jeanne du Barry” in 2023 and is set to star in “Ebenezer,” due out November 13, 2026, and “Day Drinker,” expected in 2027.
