Aftyn Behn, running for Congress, sidesteps additional inquiries about police funding

Special Election Insights on Aftin Behn’s Stance

Democratic House candidate Aftin Behn seemed to sidestep a crucial question during a recent interview about whether increased funding for police would be beneficial.

CNN’s Casey Hunt pressed Behn regarding a 2020 social media post where he expressed a desire to disband the Nashville Police Department, inquiring if he still felt that way or if he now supported more funding for law enforcement in his district.

“Those past comments were made when I was a private citizen. As an activist and now as a Tennessee state legislator, I represent a wide range of opinions from my constituents,” Behn explained.

Hunt continued, asking for clarity: “What are your thoughts today? Is more money for police a good or bad thing?”

Behn stated that his position depends on community feedback.

“I’ve been engaging with my constituents, and they seem to want investments in community safety, mental health services, and overall protection,” she remarked.

Behn, a former medical community organizer, is competing against Republican Matt Van Epps for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District in the upcoming special election. This election follows the resignation of former Republican Rep. Mark Green.

When asked about possible disagreements with policies advocated by 2024 Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Behn again deflected. “To be honest, I haven’t spent much time thinking about that. With the election just hours away, my focus is on reaching out to every single voter and proving I’m the right choice,” she stated.

Hunt pressed further, noting, “But aren’t there policies from the party’s presidential nominee that might not align with your views?” Behn reiterated her aim to work on reducing costs for Tennesseans.

After the interview, Hunt remarked on CNN that it was surprising neither Behn nor Harris, who faced a significant loss to President Trump in Tennessee, highlighted any differences in their political stances.

In a podcast resurfacing just days before the December 2 election, Behn had some strong opinions about Nashville, saying, “I hate this city, I hate single people, I hate pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate everything that makes Nashville seemingly an ‘it’ city to the rest of the country.” This candid moment painted a striking picture of her feelings towards the city she hopes to represent.

Trump had a solid victory in this district during the 2024 election, but Democrats are hopeful that Behn could either pull off a surprising win or at least a closer-than-expected loss, potentially giving them momentum as they look towards future elections.
