Republicans fired back, citing former President Trump’s recent indictment and conviction on 34 felony counts by a Manhattan jury and accusing Garland of weaponizing the Justice Department.

“I take the contempt action seriously, but I will not jeopardize the ability of our prosecutors and investigators to do their jobs effectively in any future investigation. I will not be intimidated. The Department of Justice will not be intimidated. We will continue to do our job free from political influence, and we will not shy away from protecting our democracy,” he said.
