Attorney General Pam Bondy on Tuesday ordered federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against Luigi Mangione, a man accused of bombarding United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024.
Mangion, 26, faces separate federal and state murder charges for murder. Federal charges include murder charges for using a firearm, and could be the death penalty.
“Luigi Mangion's murder of Brian Thompson – an innocent man and father of two young children was a planned, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondy said in a statement. As I saw By the AP.
“After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case when implementing President Trump's agenda to stop violent crimes and make America safe again.”
Messages seeking comment on Bondi's announcement were left by the outlet in a spokesman for Mangion's lawyers.

Mangion faces numerous state and federal charges, including first-degree murder “in the promotion of terrorist acts.”
He pleaded not guilty to the state's charges, but he has not yet received a petition for a federal murder charge.
