In Mount Pleasant, agents filmed themselves ripping down offensive anti-ICE signs while the federal authorities made over 100 immigrant arrests following actions from President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. One agent cheerfully proclaimed, “We’re bringing America back, baby,” as he crumpled the sign.
ICE shared a video on its official X account, showcasing masked agents dismantling signs with messages like “F*** Ice” and “Mount Pleasant Melts Ice.” Speaking in Spanish, one agent expressed, “This is for America. The US is number one,” and added enthusiastically, “We’ll get it back again.” The post emphasized ICE’s commitment to removing criminals from American cities, arguing that D.C. should be no exception in making it a safer place.
This incident unfolded amidst a broad federal law enforcement operation in the D.C. area. Various agencies, including ICE and DEA, were mobilized as part of Trump’s initiative to combat rising crime rates in the city. Notably, National Guard members were deployed along with military vehicles at strategic locations, like the National Mall and Union Station.
Trump’s administration took drastic measures on August 11, effectively giving control to the federal government to tackle the city’s ongoing crime wave, which has been troublesome since 2020. D.C. has a history of adopting sanctuary policies, but the landscape appears to be shifting under federal oversight. Tom Homan, an official under Trump’s border policy, commented, “D.C., under federal control, will not become a sanctuary city.”
In a related development, a member of the MS-13 gang was apprehended in D.C. as part of ongoing efforts to tackle extraordinary crimes. Authorities have emphasized that they are collaborating closely with local police, stating that when illegal immigrants are found committing crimes, they will be handed over to ICE. The officials asserted that while not all unauthorized migrants are criminals, there’s a concentrated focus on those deemed a threat to safety, insisting that D.C. offers no sanctuary for these individuals.
