Major Drug Seizure at Port of Los Angeles
On Thursday, federal law enforcement made significant strides against international drug-smuggling operations, seizing a large quantity of narcotics at the Port of Los Angeles. Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted nearly 500 pounds of cocaine from a vast vessel, marking another success in federal counter-narcotics efforts.
The operation focused on the Motor Tanker Aquatravesia, a crude oil carrier that had recently docked in Southern California. Acting on shared intelligence, HSI and Coast Guard personnel conducted a meticulously planned boarding operation to search the ship.
A breakthrough occurred when a specialized Coast Guard canine signaled a specific area of the tanker, leading to the discovery of the concealed drugs. Federal agents subsequently recovered over 226 kilograms (around 498 pounds) of bulk cocaine intended for local distribution. Authorities believe this seized contraband has a street value of approximately $6.4 million.
The operation underscores the evolving tactics of international drug cartels, which are increasingly leveraging high-seas transportation methods to smuggle illegal substances. Eddy Wang, the Special Agent in Charge at HSI Los Angeles, commended the quick response and expertise of the teams involved, noting that the seizure prevented criminal organizations from reaping significant profits.
Wang remarked, “This operation highlights Homeland Security Investigations’ unwavering commitment to combating transnational crime and safeguarding the United States from illicit narcotics. HSI’s swift response and investigative expertise were key in identifying and seizing over 226 kilograms of cocaine destined for our communities.”
Federal authorities confirmed the contraband has been removed for destruction, with an ongoing investigation aimed at tracing the shipment’s origins and identifying those responsible for the smuggling attempt.
Captain Stacey Crecy, Sector Commander at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, added, “The success of this narcotics seizure is a testament to the coordinated efforts of the DHS enterprise to dismantle drug smuggling operations. Through stellar coordination, we effectively detained the suspect and removed the contraband from the vessel.”
HSI has arrested one individual, and two more have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
