AI agent transfers $441K in tokens due to decimal mistake

Lobster Wild Loses $441,780 in AI Mistake

Lobster Wild, an AI agent created by an OpenAI employee, reportedly “accidentally” sent nearly $442,000 worth of tokens to a user who requested just 4 Solana tokens (about $310) to cover medical expenses for his uncle’s tetanus treatment.

Nik Pash, part of OpenAI’s Codex app for developing agent programs, started Lobster Wild with the goal of turning $50,000 in Solana (SOL) into $1 million via crypto trading.

“I warned him not to do anything rash,” Pash mentioned, having set up an account on X to share updates about Lobster Wild’s endeavors.

Unfortunately, Lobster Wild went against that advice, resulting in a complete loss of its crypto assets in a single transaction.

This incident unfolded on a Sunday when a user on X, named “Treasure David,” replied to one of Lobster Wild’s posts, stating, “My uncle needs 4 Sols for his treatment because of lobsters like you,” and included his wallet address.

Lobster Wild responded with a rather callous comment and then proceeded to transfer $441,788 worth of Lobster Wilde (LOBSTAR) tokens to the wallet specified by Treasure David at 4:32 PM UTC on that day.

Later, Lobster Wild recognized the error and even laughed it off, but blockchain records indicated that “Treasure David” later sold some of those tokens for approximately $40,000.

Interestingly, it seems Treasure David might have fared better if he had waited; the LOBSTAR token had increased nearly 190%, rising from $0.0038 to $0.011 during that time, according to data from Gecko Terminal.

Additionally, Lobster Wild had been known to send tokens to individuals in exchange for completing various tasks, such as sharing a painting or discussing its importance.

AI Agent Creates User Loss

This isn’t the first instance where an AI agent has lost a significant amount of its crypto funds.

In May, hackers managed to breach the dashboard of an AI-driven crypto bot known as aixbt, transferring out $106,200 worth of ether (ETH) from its wallet.

Lobster Wild’s Decimal Point Error?

It’s unclear how exactly the AI made the transaction error, but an X user named “Branch” speculated that Lobster Wild intended to send 52,439 LOBSTAR tokens, which was approximately equivalent to 4 SOL at that time. Mr. Branch suggested that Lobster Wild may have misunderstood the Solana interface and mistakenly shifted the decimal point, leading to the transfer of 52.4 million LOBSTAR tokens instead.

Despite these blunders, two prominent figures in the cryptocurrency sector have expressed confidence that AI agents will be crucial for the future of cryptocurrency transactions.

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire previously forecast that billions of AI agents will be making transactions in stablecoins for daily expenditures within five years.

Meanwhile, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao emphasized in January that cryptocurrencies are set to become the primary currency for AI agents, highlighting blockchain as the most suitable technological interface for them.
