AI Company Resurrecting Classic Hollywood Stars to Read Audiobooks

Artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing Hollywood stars like Judy Garland, James Dean and Burt Reynolds back to life, with the approval of the late actors’ estates.

AI voice cloning software company ElevenLabs says it’s creating AI-generated voices of deceased actors to read audiobooks in its recently released Reader app. report From CNN.

For example, Garland’s AI-generated voice will reportedly read an audiobook of “The Wizard of Oz.”

“We deeply respect their achievements and are honored to have their voices as part of our platform,” said Eleven Labs’ Dustin Blank. “Adding them to our growing list of narrators marks a major step toward our mission of making content accessible in every language and voice.”

Eleven Labs said it had signed deals with estates of deceased celebrities.

Notably, the company made headlines earlier this year when its AI technology was reportedly used to create fake automated calls from President Joe Biden urging New Hampshire residents not to vote in the state’s Democratic presidential primary.

“All of Eleven Labs’ new partnerships are well within the bounds of the law,” said David Gunkel, a professor at Northern Illinois University who tracks AI in media and entertainment.

“The estate stands to make a significant amount from licenses and deals,” Gunkel added, “similar to how companies negotiate copyright deals to use popular Queen songs in advertising, and record companies could theoretically turn down any offer.”

This isn’t the first time an individual’s voice has been trained by AI, which has become an increasingly powerful tool that is raising eyebrows among those concerned about how far the technology will go.

As Breitbart News reported last week, an AI version of sports commentator Al Michaels will deliver “personalized” summaries to Peacock subscribers during the 2024 Olympics.

In December, it was reported that a clone of the voice of the late legendary Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart, who was known for his distinctively slow-speaking style, was now able to put users of subscription-based wellness app Calm to sleep.
