Pope Leo XIV Raises Concerns About AI’s Impact on Youth
Pope Leo XIV expressed concerns on Friday regarding the potential negative effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on young people. His remarks were delivered at the AI and Ethics conference, partially held at the Vatican.
The Pope highlighted that the influence of AI on the intellectual and neurological growth of children has raised alarm. He remarked, “We all share worries about the possible consequences of AI on the development of young minds. The wellbeing of society hinges on nurturing our God-given talents.”
He further noted, “Ultimately, genuine wisdom is more about understanding the essence of life than merely having access to data,” reflecting on some of the troubling mental effects of AI.
In a similar vein, former First Lady Melania Trump also addressed this issue in May when she announced the implementation of the Take It Down Act. She described AI and social media as the “next generation of digital candies,” suggesting they are enticing, addictive, and potentially harmful to children’s cognitive development.
Recent reports highlighted troubling incidents linked to the misuse of technology. A 16-year-old in Kentucky tragically took his own life after being threatened with a demand for $3,000 to prevent information from reaching his family and friends.
Additionally, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) pointed out in 2023 that predators are exploiting AI to create realistic depictions of child exploitation that can be hard to differentiate from real images. This alarming trend has been reported as a significant issue for years.
According to the Associated Press, for Pope Leo, AI stands as one of the most critical challenges facing society today. He made a reference to his predecessor, Pope Leo XIII, who addressed workers’ rights during the Industrial Revolution, stressing the importance of safeguarding dignity and rights amidst evolving societal dynamics.
