Las Vegas Premiere of New ‘Wizard of Oz’ Experience

In Las Vegas, the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” was reborn with an immersive experience on Thursday. The premiere showcased various high-tech elements, including swirling winds and drone-operated monkeys.

A yellow-brick carpet, resembling the iconic yellow brick road, welcomed guests to Sphere, a modern entertainment venue screening the updated version of the 1939 musical.

Notable guests included Lorna Luft, the daughter of Judy Garland, who famously portrayed Dorothy.

James Dolan, the CEO of Sphere Entertainment, addressed the audience excitedly. “We are finally off to see the wizard!” he exclaimed. He emphasized that attendees would experience a groundbreaking form of storytelling.

However, not everyone is on board. Some cinephiles are hesitant about altering a beloved classic, while those in Hollywood express concerns over AI possibly replacing human roles.

Dolan reassured the crowd, promising an unforgettable experience of the “Wizard of Oz.” He mentioned that this event would allow the audience to truly feel part of the story.

The reimagining of the film took over two years and engaged around 2,000 people, including teams from the Sphere, Google’s DeepMind, and Warner Bros Discovery. AI played a key role, enhancing the visuals for Sphere’s expansive, wraparound screen.

AI technology restored vintage frames to high definition and added details like freckles on Dorothy’s face. This might signal a significant shift in Hollywood’s relationship with AI tools.

The Sphere incorporated interactive features; for instance, fans simulated wind and dispersed leaf-shaped confetti, emulating the tornado scene where Dorothy’s farmhouse is lifted away. Additionally, helium-filled monkeys, measuring 16 feet, floated above as the Wicked Witch schemed against Dorothy.
