With West Nile Virus making its way into California, a new AI-driven mosquito elimination device might be just what residents need to fend off what’s considered one of the deadliest creatures on the planet.
The Photon Matrix is a sophisticated zapper that merges advanced light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology with radar, steering a precise laser to identify and eliminate mosquitoes using a blue laser beam.
Some have referred to it as “an Iron Dome for mosquitoes,” a comment made by a robotics enthusiast on X.
This device is tailored to specifically target various species of mosquitoes while sparing other flying insects like butterflies, according to the startup based in China.
Rising temperatures have led to an increase in mosquito populations and extended their active season. Earlier this month marked the second death in California this year attributed to West Nile Virus, a serious illness transmitted by mosquitoes.
As of mid-August, health officials in California have reported 30 human cases of the virus, which is the highest count in five years.
The virus is asymptomatic in around 80% of cases; however, severe infections can result in fever, intense headache, neck stiffness, rash, joint pain, confusion, and altered levels of consciousness.
The Photon Matrix device is said to detect and eliminate insects measuring as small as 2mm and moving at speeds of up to 3.3 feet per second.
The company states on its website, “Our intelligent mosquito air defense system is powered by LiDAR detection and targeting technology. By integrating AI vision, real-time tracking, and precise laser elimination, it offers a more intelligent, chemical-free approach to mosquito control.”
The device’s LiDAR system has a detection range of 20 feet, and the zapping sound it produces is described as “quieter than a whisper.”
In addition, the company offers an indoor model that employs infrared detection coupled with a laser not visible to the human eye.
Promotional videos of the outdoor version display the unit showcasing a light spectacle when in action, as it activates its bright blue lasers to zap mosquitoes.
The outdoor model is priced at $1,088, while the indoor variety costs $988.
