AI 'Nudify' Websites Generate Millions with Deep Fake Porn Due to Tech Companies

Analysis Reveals Profitability of AI-Powered “Nudify” Websites

A recent examination has uncovered that AI-driven “Nudify” websites are producing non-consensual deepfake adult content by using photos of unsuspecting individuals. These sites are leveraging services from major tech players like Google, Amazon, and Cloudflare.

Research conducted by a publication that delves into online deceptions has highlighted the dark side and financial success of these “Nudify” platforms. Users can upload images to create sexually explicit deepfakes, predominantly targeting women and girls. Although these services pose significant risks, they remain surprisingly popular, attracting millions of users each month and generating potential annual revenues nearing $36 million.

The analysis covered 85 such websites, revealing that most depend on technical support from big names in the tech industry. Specifically, Amazon and Cloudflare provide hosting or content delivery for 62 out of the 85 sites, while Google’s sign-on system is utilized by 54 of them.

One co-founder of the publication and expert on online safety criticized the tech industry’s lackadaisical attitude towards generative AI. He emphasized that these companies need to act swiftly to cut ties with AI nudifiers, given that their primary function is to facilitate sexual harassment.

In response to these revelations, a major cloud service confirmed that they have clear terms of service that mandate compliance with laws, and they will act to remove prohibited content once alerted. Google admitted that some websites have breached these terms and is taking steps to address these issues while working on long-term solutions. Meanwhile, Cloudflare had not issued any comments by the time of this report.

The growth of Nudify websites has surged since 2019, driven by advancements in AI image generation. Many of these platforms profit by selling “credits” or subscriptions for generating harmful images. The consequences for victims are profound, as personal photos have been exploited to create non-consensual explicit content, leading to bullying among peers, particularly in schools.

Reports have emerged about students at Beverly Hills Middle School who shared deepfake nudes of their classmates. One fifth-grade student was expelled for creating and distributing these AI-generated images, which involved the faces of 16 students aged 13-14 being placed onto digitally altered naked bodies. This incident shocked the community and raised significant concerns about the potential dangers of emerging technology.

Using a range of open-source tools and data, researchers estimate that eight of these websites might have earned between $2.6 million and $18.4 million in just the past six months, indicating a possible annual revenue of about $36 million. The United States, India, Brazil, Mexico, and Germany were reported as the top countries where users frequent these sites.
