While you were busy watching your favorite NBA star sink a three-point shot, a robot in Nagakute, Japan was quietly perfecting the game-winning shot.
That's right, a humanoid robot named CUE6 stepped onto the court and made jaws drop faster than Stephen Curry's buzzer-beater.
Toyota's basketball competition robot “CUE6” has applied for the Guinness World Record for longest shot by a humanoid robot, proving that AI can play basketball with the best robots.

CUE journey
The CUE story began in 2017 as a passion project for a small group of Toyota engineers. Inspired by the challenge of replicating human-like precision in physical tasks, the team embarked on a journey to build a basketball-playing robot. Early prototypes were rudimentary pieces of Lego components. But each iteration brings new advancements, transforming CUE from a simple mechanical shooter to a sophisticated humanoid robot.

By 2019, the third generation of CUE broke the first Guinness World Record, making 2,020 consecutive basketball free throws. This milestone demonstrated the robot's ability to adapt and learn by using artificial intelligence to analyze and improve its shooting mechanics. Subsequent versions introduced breakthrough features such as autonomous movement, ball handling, and even dribbling. Dribbling required the robot to adapt to subtle changes in each bounce.

Setting the latest record
CUE6's latest achievement was no small feat. The robot's AI had to consider multiple variables, including the ball's weight, trajectory, and even the court's atmospheric conditions. Although the first attempt failed, CUE6 recalibrated and succeeded on the second attempt, demonstrating its ability to learn and adapt in real time.
Project leader Tomohiro Nomi expressed pride in this achievement and emphasized that the robot's AI is designed to develop its own optimal pitching style. “We wanted to surprise the world and demonstrate the power of craftsmanship and technology,” he said.

The CUE journey is about more than just sinking hoops. This represents a broader exploration of how robots can mimic human behavior and adapt to dynamic environments. A basketball-playing robot may seem novel, but the underlying technology has far-reaching implications. From industrial automation to healthcare, the adaptive AI and robotics principles developed through projects like CUE have the potential to revolutionize countless fields.
Toyota's ultimate goal is ambitious: to create a humanoid robot that can dunk like Michael Jordan. While that day may be years away, the progress made by the CUE project serves as an inspiring example of what is possible when human ingenuity and cutting-edge technology meet. Helpful.

The journey from Lego prototype to world record-holding humanoid robot is nothing short of amazing. CUE6's story is a reminder of what can be achieved with a little innovation and a lot of perseverance. Whether on the basketball court or any other arena, CUE6's record-breaking shots are a testament to the power of dreaming big and pushing boundaries.
