AI whistleblowers speak out

The letter was signed by 13 current and former employees. OpenAI, Google’s DeepMind, AnthropicSix of the signatories requested anonymity, our colleague Tara Suter reported.

“Without effective government oversight of these companies, current and former employees are the few people who can hold the companies accountable to the public,” the letter reads.

“But extensive non-disclosure agreements prevent us from raising our concerns with anyone other than the companies who may not be able to address these issues.”

The letter specifically targets leading AI companies. Follow some principlesThis includes “not entering into any agreements that prohibit them from ‘disparaging’ or criticizing the company because of risk-related concerns” and supporting a “culture of open criticism.”

“Normal whistleblower protections are inadequate because they focus on illegal activity, but many of the risks we are concerned about are Not yet regulated” the letter continues.

“Given the history of these cases across our industry, it’s understandable that some of us fear various forms of retaliation. We are not the first to encounter these issues or to speak out about them.”
