Some of President Joe Biden’s longtime aides and advisers are reportedly trying to persuade him to drop out of the presidential race.
Those who support Biden’s resignation have yet to decide “how to persuade him” that he should step down, three people familiar with the matter said. Said of The New York Times:
They said they must make the case to a president who remains confident in the strength of his campaign that former President Donald J. Trump cannot win. They must convince the president that another candidate, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, can beat Trump. And they must ensure that if Biden does leave office, the process of selecting another candidate is orderly and does not cause chaos within the Democratic Party.
Those discussions were discussed by three people familiar with the matter, who, like others in this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive situation. One of the people said there was no indication that Biden himself was aware of the discussions.
“This is clearly not true,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. Times“President Biden’s team strongly supports him.”
Some of Biden’s longest-serving advisers and family members reportedly believe he should continue to run the campaign, and Biden himself believes he remains the best person to defeat former President Donald Trump.
Ron Klain, Biden’s ally and former chief of staff, Said According to The New Republic, Trump said Thursday that polls showing him beating Biden were “mostly” correct, but he insisted there was still a way to go.
Meanwhile, the Biden campaign is conducting a poll between Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump to determine whether Harris is the better Democratic candidate. Times report:
The survey, being conducted this week and commissioned by the Biden campaign’s analytical team, is believed to be the first time since the debate that Biden aides have tried to gauge what the vote share would be if his running mate came out on top, said three people with knowledge of the survey, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.
It was not clear why the poll was conducted or how the campaign plans to use its findings, but they could be interpreted as the team gathering information to make the case that the president’s chances of moving forward are slim, or to make the case that Biden remains the party’s strongest standard-bearer.
The efforts come as Biden’s longtime aides and advisers are increasingly convinced he will have no choice but to step aside from the campaign and have been exploring ways to persuade him in recent days, The New York Times reported Thursday. A growing number of prominent lawmakers have called for Biden to withdraw from the campaign or suggested he should reconsider his plans to run.
a The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos Poll Indicated On Thursday, it was announced that the race is effectively tied between Trump and Biden, but that Harris would fare slightly better if she were to campaign on Biden’s behalf.
