Air Force commando falls from 170-foot height during UTSA game

A sudden incident at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, shocked thousands of football fans when an Air Force commando fell while rappelling from the rafters during a military demonstration before the University of Texas-San Antonio’s game against Navy on Saturday.

The airman, whose name has not been released, plunged to the ground during a fast-rope exercise that was part of the “Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans” pregame event. Video footage shared on social media showed the service member losing grip and tumbling down, triggering gasps and screams from the crowd.

Medical personnel rapidly attended to the airman on the field for about ten minutes. Meanwhile, UTSA staff formed a protective semicircle around him until he was taken away on a stretcher, as reported by local news outlets.

He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition, although there have been no updates on his status since Sunday.

The demonstration had been part of the pregame coin toss, which was delayed for roughly ten minutes following the fall. The four service members involved were part of Detachment 2 from the Air Force’s 6th Combat Training Squadron stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, where they are trained for high-altitude descents.

Since its inaugural season in 2011, the UTSA Roadrunners have played at the Alamodome, which has a ceiling height of about 170 feet. The game attracted a crowd of 23,297 eager fans.

In light of this incident, UTSA officials expressed their concern, stating, “We are deeply saddened by what happened at the start of tonight’s game. Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected soldier, his family, and his military comrades.” They also mentioned offering support services for anyone in the community who might be impacted by the event.

Similarly, the American Conference expressed their condolences, emphasizing their focus on the individual involved and stressing the importance of coordinating with local authorities. “We respect the family’s privacy and will communicate any further updates through the appropriate channels,” a spokesperson commented.
