Trump Attends Veterans Day Ceremony at Landover Stadium
On Sunday, Air Force One made a low pass over Northwest Stadium in Maryland as President Trump arrived to take part in the Veterans Day halftime ceremony titled “Salute.”
The crowds erupted in cheers as the presidential plane flew overhead, giving spectators a view of both the aircraft and the enthusiastic fans displayed on the jumbotron.
Trump was set to watch an NFL game between his home team, the Washington Commanders, and the Detroit Lions from the owner’s box. The Commanders are currently playing away games while a massive $3.7 billion stadium—expected to be ready by 2030—is under construction in the capital.
Following Trump’s announcement to attend, all tickets for the game sold out rapidly, according to reports.
This match will also feature one of the annual NFL ceremonies to honor veterans in advance of Veterans Day on Tuesday.
There was a bit of buzz, too, about Trump possibly wanting to name the new stadium after himself. This notion hasn’t been confirmed by him or his representatives, though the White House press secretary was notably non-committal when asked about it.
While speaking to a publication, someone reportedly remarked, “That’s a beautiful name, because President Trump is the one who made the new stadium possible,” reflecting mixed feelings about his involvement.
However, the relationship has seen its complications. Back in July, some project managers warned that they might pause the stadium plans if the team name wasn’t changed back to the former name, which was retired due to its offensive connotations toward Native Americans.
Currently, the Commanders have shown no intentions of changing their name.
As for how Trump plans to steer the ongoing stadium agreements remains unclear, especially since President Biden transferred the land for the new site to the city before leaving office.
