Joby Aviation Demonstrates Electric Taxi Flight Over San Francisco
A flying taxi took to the skies above San Francisco on Thursday, capturing the attention of the local tech community.
Joby Aviation’s compact electric aircraft performed a demonstration flight over the Bay, moving near the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This event drew interest from reporters and industry professionals at the St. Francis Yacht Club.
This flight is part of Joby’s initiative to introduce an electric air taxi service. The aircraft, designed for vertical takeoff and landing, aims to transport passengers on shorter routes, typically ranging from 16 to 50 miles.
Joby’s aircraft accommodates four passengers and is powered by six propellers. The company estimates that rides could cost between $100 and $170—roughly similar to an Uber Black fare for a journey from San Francisco to Napa.
Operating out of Santa Cruz, Joby is one of several firms vying to launch eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. Competitor Archer Aviation, based in San Jose, is working on a similar concept.
Both companies are currently in the testing phase for certification with federal authorities, paving the way for commercial flights.
Additionally, Joby has been selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to join a pilot program designed to expedite the rollout of eVTOL technologies.
States such as New York, Texas, and Florida might see commercial flights debut this year, with California likely following suit.
During Thursday’s demonstration, the plane took off from Oakland, reached speeds of about 160 miles per hour across the bay, circled near the Golden Gate Bridge, and then returned.
According to the company, the aircraft operates more quietly than helicopters, flying around 1,000 feet above urban areas. This setup would allow passengers to bypass traffic congestion, enabling quicker travel across the region.
If successful, this technology could pave the way for air taxis to become a popular commuting option in the Bay Area — particularly for those willing to pay for speedier trips.
